What is immersive theatre?
The IMMERSIVE THEATRE is an intimate and immediate form of contemporary performance that has developed in the last 15 years in Northern Europe and the United States. A form of "engaging theater in which the public is free to choose what they want to see and where to go." This style is related to "itinerant theatre", although the dynamics and the relationship with the public are very different, as there is no single route possible and the viewer has the possibility to build his own path and dramaturgy. The terms 'site-specific' and 'site-sympathetic' to describe this type of work are more relevant. In this form of performance, the space becomes directly related to the dramaturgy.
The audience is no longer composed by passive viewers, these are now part of the drama. They are allowed to explore the scenic space how they want, allowing them to decide what they see and what they do not. They can be conducted from room to room. They could be invited to become an active part of the performance. The lines between the interpreter and the audience and between fiction and life are blurred.
The audience becomes immersed in an history and is not only witnessing. They are in the middle of the dramatic events without the distance nomrllay created by a proscenium. Why will the theater continue to demand a passive audience? Today the audience seeks the experience, and immersive theatre offers it. Immersive theater has assumed these changes, experiencing more and more the possibilities of participation and interaction with the public.
